Skin care during pregnancy.
Doctor Tiina Meder:
“Speaking of skin care during pregnancy, I feel obliged to start with the classic phrase ‘Pregnancy is a very special time in a woman’s life’.
I am afraid that in month 6, an average pregnant woman is about to explode if someone tells her again. Pregnant women have to give up certain things. Many believe that this includes beauty treatments, such as manicure, hair coloring, facials. In reality, pregnant women have very few restrictions when it comes to cosmetic skin care.
Is this a Spoiler Alert? No, skin care during pregnancy does not have to be ‘organic’ to be safe!
What to avoid during pregnancy and why?
Systemic retinoids, especially Roaccutane, used in acne treatment are strictly prohibited during pregnancy, even if local skin care does not seem to be very effective. Dermatologists always warn women about this and advise not to plan the pregnancy during the entire duration of therapy when issuing a prescription, this is just a reminder to the woman.
Unfortunately Skincare products containing retinol derivatives are also not recommended. There is no definitive evidence yet of adverse effects, but doctors suggest that there is a risk, however small, of harming the embryo.
Just be on the safe side!
Whitening and lightening solutions containing hydroquinone will not harm the baby. However, during pregnancy, your skin can become more sensitive and the risk of side effects and complications increases significantly!
Salicylic acid is also not recommended for the same reason. Salicylic acid is sometimes found in body care solutions, so be on the lookout for that too and if you find it in the ingredients of your body cream, it is best to put it aside for later. Glycolic acid is still a matter of debate. Some dermatologists believe that it should not be used during pregnancy. However, no one is saying that you should avoid all AHAs!
Citric acid and lactic acid, for example, are safe. Essential oils are another large group of ingredients that should be used with caution. Yes, they are natural. No, that does not necessarily mean they are safe. The substances they contain have a low molecular weight and a high volatility, so they can affect your body as a whole.
Many oils increase the skin's sensitivity to UV, and you really don't need that during pregnancy because the risk of pigmentation is high. It is better to stay away from essential oils at this time, except for special solutions for skin care during pregnancy. You can use them if you tolerate the smell well, because they do not contain potentially harmful oils.
Camphor, peppermint extract and mint oil are also not recommended, especially late in pregnancy and for women with an increased risk of miscarriage. Camphor and mint can increase the tonicity of the pregnant uterus. These ingredients are completely safe outside of pregnancy, but if you are pregnant, it is better to carefully check the labels for them. Pay special attention to creams for "tired feet", solutions against swelling, skin care against cellulite.
Beauty injections will also have to wait. Botulinum toxin, fillers and biological revitalization are officially prohibited for pregnant women in all countries of the world. Perhaps it is a good time to try alternative methods, such as peptides for crow's feet and intense hydration of the skin, which in some cases makes the need for more drastic measures unnecessary.
The same goes for machine treatments (intensive or energy-supported methods). Do not plan laser resurfacing, RF lifts and of course cryolipolysis during pregnancy. Aesthetic surgery will also have to wait, this will come as no surprise to anyone, I hope.
Pregnancy is a difficult, but also a wonderful time. You do not have to panic and stop using your deodorant because it contains aluminum or your day cream because of scary parabens. There is also no point in going completely organic. Of course, some things have to wait, but not as much as you might think.
We are happy to assure you that we only use ingredients with proven safety and no effect on an embryo or breast milk.
